Chitta Dey, the sculptor, was born on 2 October 1957, son of late Kali Krishna Dey and Late Pravabati Dey. With a penchant for art from his very childhood Chitta graduated in drawing and painting from the Government College of Art And Craft, Kolkata in 1985. As a student he developed a keen interest in theatre and came to be associated with various experimental theatre groups like Theatre Workshop, Nandipat, Calcutta People's Choir, Theatre Lovers Group, and the State Natya Academy, Dancers' Guild etc. He worked as Art Director and Costume Designer on stage productions like Narak Guljar , Schweyk Gelo Juddhe, Takshak , Lathi, Bisarjan, Henyali, Dibaratra, Raktakta Bandhan, Taser Desh, Bara Karta, Balidan etc. and also for serials like Tero Parban, and Ashcharya Deepak by Sonex , and Pheluda, a production by Bibhash Chakroborty.
Chitta held solo exhibitions of his sculptures and paintings in 1989, 1990 and 1991 at Academy of Fine Arts and various other places, participated in 'Calcutta 300'.
Chitta Dey was the only sculptor presented at the auction organized by 'Khusi', an NGO led by former cricketer Kapil Dev, engaged in promoting child education, health care etc.
The Flight to Harmony Foundation is his brainchild and it was he who improvised the entire technical know-how required for the project of carving a hill into a modern sculpture.
